How Ottolenghi’s ROVI kept its atmosphere and lost the noise

the challenge

Ottolenghi has always treated noise and reverberation control as a design priority, not an afterthought. Their venues rely on hard, tactile surfaces, but those same surfaces bounce sound around a room and quickly turn a busy service into a wall of noise.

For ROVI, the brief was precise: absorb enough sound to make conversation across a table effortless, without stripping out the buzz and energy that makes a restaurant feel alive. Over-treat the space and it feels flat and awkward. Under-treat it and diners are shouting over each other by 8pm and don’t come back.

our approach

We built an acoustic model of the space to establish the reverberation time of the room before any treatment. From there, we tested varying thicknesses and coverage of Oscar Elite acoustic plaster against that model, adjusting until we reached the point where speech clarity and room atmosphere were both right, not one at the expense of the other.

Oscar Elite was chosen for its ability to deliver that acoustic performance invisibly. Applied directly to the ceiling, it reads as a seamless architectural finish rather than a visible acoustic treatment, keeping ROVI’s interior design intact.

the result

Oscar Elite was applied to the ceiling throughout ROVI, bringing the room’s reverberation down to a comfortable level while preserving the atmosphere the space was designed for. Diners can hold a conversation across the table without the room feeling deadened.

This is the third Ottolenghi project we’ve worked on, following SonaSpray at Ottolenghi Spitalfields and Oscar Elite at NOPI on Warwick Street, a relationship built on Ottolenghi’s consistent priority of getting restaurant acoustics right from the outset. Our work with Ottolenghi has also been featured in the Evening Standard, which highlighted the acoustic results achieved at NOPI.
